Congratulations on taking steps to manage stress. The goal is to deal with stress through techniques such as deep breathing exercises, physical activity, hobbies, meditation, relaxation and counseling.

Maybe you've thought about stress and its effect on you. But still it seems like taking time to change it is overwhelming. You may want to get a clearer idea of what causes stress in your life, then examine what small steps you can take.

Stage 3 Preparing to reduce stress
Perhaps you've looked at the benefits of reducing stress. You have a clear image of your life with less stress and more control. Now it's time to learn more and to practice. Soon reducing and avoiding stress will become natural.

Stage 4 Feeling good about less stress
You've discovered you can do something about stress. This is the beginning of a lifetime of healthier behavior. Now take these steps to increase confidence and build on success.

Stage 5 Maintaining stress reduction
You are controlling your stress and your progress is something to be proud! Overcoming old habits is not easy, and you've done a great job. Now the challenge is to manage your stress for life.

Although it seems like you will move from one stage to the next in a straight line, that's not necessarily so. Expect to go up and down between stages while working towards permanent change.
